Why We Need A New Skating Game!

It has been what feels like years upon years upon years since the last Skateboarding game, the last one released being Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 remastered around two years ago. However it feels much longer than that, but perhaps that’s just because this writer has both a lot of love and a lot of hunger for the skating genre.

Even though Tony Hawk’s remastered classics are jam-packed with content and challenges to do, it isn’t the same as a new game. The skating sub-genre used to be packed with games; from all the various Tony Hawk games like Tony Hawk Underground and Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam, as well as the entire Skate series which also saw a lot of players in its heyday. The skating genre was so popular at one point we even had a Simpsons skating game try and latch onto the market (and that game was abysmal, let me tell you).

So, surely the lack of new skating games can’t be due to not having a big enough player base?! Just searching ‘Skate 4‘ on Twitter will show you the vast number of people who have a lot of love for something that doesn’t even officially exist yet.

Given that Vicarious Visions has just merged with Activision Blizzard, there is a strong doubt we will see remasters of any more Tony Hawk games or even another game entirely. This is because Vicarious Visions has now been said to only work on in-house Blizzard IPs. You can find more information on that here.

Skaters are ready for a new game and rearing for it too. As a whole, it doesn’t make sense as to why it’s been such a long time since the last skateboard game. Given the capabilities of the new generation of consoles, it would be amazing to see what they are capable of in terms of a new skating title. Surely it can’t be that hard to make a new game with new character and board customisation?
