Live service RPG Babylon’s Fall to shut down less than a year after release

Babylon’s Fall, Platinum Games’ live service action-RPG, will stop development next year

babylon's fall shut down

In a blog post released this morning, PlatinumGames have announced that Babylon’s Fall will shut down next February.

The game launched on March 3rd but struggled to attract a playerbase, peaking at just under 1200 players on Steam. Initially, Platinum promised to keep working on the game, assuring fans that there were “no plans to reduce the scale of development on Babylon’s Fall”.

The game, developed by Platinum and published by Square Enix, was lambasted on launch for its live service model. This, on top of a $60 price tag, turned a lot of people away from the game. Now, with the termination of the game’s live service, it will become unplayable in a few months.

Closing Remarks

“With the desire of delivering an exhilarating online multiplayer action RPG set in an elaborate high fantasy world, we launched the game’s official service on Thursday, March 3, 2022, and have continued to undertake additional development and operations”, the team said in the blog post. “However, it is with deep regret to inform you that we will be terminating the game’s service on February 27, 2023.”

Up until the game’s shutdown, the team aims to “implement as many events and other initiatives as we can”. However, there will be no more “large-scale updates” as they have cancelled development on them. The post also includes a timeline, with season 2 running to November 29th. After that, the “final season” will start and run until the game’s termination.

The blog post closes out by thanking the community for their support and feedback. The message points out the “great deal of enthusiastic messages of support alongside keen observations of issues and suggestions for improvement” they got from the community, saying that it “really made us feel that we were able to create the world of Babylon’s Fall together with our players”.

The team concludes saying “despite all of your support, we are truly sad and sorry to say that we will be unable to continue with the game’s service.”
