Alone in the Dark remake leaked ahead of reveal

Alone in the Dark, the progenitor of the survival horror genre, will be getting a remake according to leaked photos

Alone in the Dark, the 1992 horror game inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, is reportedly getting a remake. The game will be officially announced later today, however was leaked ahead of schedule by Belgian retailer Smartoys. While the company have now taken the listing down, some managed to get details on the game before the page went down. Insider AestheticGamer also backs up the now-deleted page and posted screenshots and a quick summary of the game.

Seems a website posted a bit early the thing I was teasing a few days ago, indeed Alone in the Dark 1 is being remade in the style of RE:2. Be announced properly later today. Southern Gothic Horror w/Lovecraft. Story by the guy who wrote SOMA & Amnesia: The Dark Descent. pic.twitter.com/IqpWK6JwkN

From the descriptions, the remake will be in the style of Capcom’s 2019 release of Resident Evil 2. Trading the fixed-camera perspective of the original for an over-the-shoulder view more in-line with modern releases. Ironically, the original Resident Evil took heavy inspiration from Alone in the Dark, with the latter considered a forefather of survival horror thanks to its influence. The screenshots also seem to imply a bit more of an action focus. One of the photos shows the main character aiming a gun at a fleshy skeleton creature.

Characters, gameplay, and plot

Speaking of characters, the game stars Edward Carnby, a private detective, and Emily Hartwood, niece of the man whose mansion you explore. Both these characters are playable, and have “separate campaigns with overlap”. The game will be survival horror through-and-through, as you need to be smart with resources in order to survive. There’ll also be plenty of backtracking and puzzle solving, as one would expect from a survival horror game.

As for the story, it seems as though this will be a reimagining more than a direct recreation. The product description referred to the remake as a “love letter to the cult ’90s game” with a story “that’s as sinister as it is memorable”. AestheticGamer also noted that the story is being handled by “the guy who wrote SOMA & Amnesia: The Dark Descent”. So, however this new story turns out, at least it’s in good hands.

The game’s publisher, THQ Nordic, are holding a digital showcase tonight, at 8:00pm BST (12:00pm PT, 3:00pm ET), so the game will likely be officially announced then.
