Guillermo Del Toro’s spin on Pinocchio features an all-star cast and releases in cinemas in November

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, after well over a decade of development hell, has finally got a trailer and release window. The teaser trailer is narrated by the famous talking cricket, in this adaptation called “Sebastian J. Cricket”. In the trailer, he says “I want to tell you a story. It’s a story you may think you know but, you don’t”, which suggests del Toro’s unique take on the tale. It also has a star-studdied cast, with Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Ron Perlman, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton on the cast list. The film premieres “in select theatres” in November, and will make its way onto Netflix in December.

Guillermo del Toro announced Pinocchio back in 2008. He stated that the film was his passion project due to how the story of Pinocchio had influenced his work. The film went into full production in 2012, with a release year of 2013/14. However, the project went into development hell with no information released on the film for years. Eventually, del Toro said in 2017 that the film would need $35 million to be made.

No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio… I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember

Guillermo del Toro, on Pinocchio

Initially, del Toro resigned that the movie wouldn’t be made since no companies would pick it up. However, in late 2018, Netflix acquired it, allowing the movie to go into production. Now, with a trailer and a release window, it looks like Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio passion project will finally see the light after 14 years of development.
