A new hiring call reveals Romero Games is working on an FPS in Unreal Engine 5
John Romero, co-founder of id Software and co-creator of DOOM, Wolfenstein 3D, Quake, & more, is working on a new FPS. This according to a Tweet looking for new hires to Romero Games, which also specifically mentions Unreal Engine 5 experience. You can check out the positions available on their website.
This shooter marks the first original FPS worked on by John Romero since 2005’s Area 51. The game credits him as an “additional designer”, so how directly involved he was on the game remains a mystery. More recently, Romero Games developed SIGIL, an unofficial fifth episode for DOOM. While released separately as a DOOM WAD, the episode was patched into console ports of DOOM by Bethesda. Last year, Romero also confirmed that he’s working on a sequel to Sigil.

While, obviously, we don’t know much about this FPS yet, the positions available give us a bit of info. Under the “code” section in the open positions, Romero Games is hiring for a “senior multiplayer programmer” and “online architect”. So we can assume that the game will have some kind of online component. Whether that will be a small co-op mode, a bigger competetive multiplayer, or the whole game is an online shooter remains to be seen. However, given that the team is working with “a major publisher”, anything’s possible.
This game will mark Romero Games’ first official release since 2020, where they released Empire of Sin. That game saw mixed-to-average reviews on release, so here’s hoping the new FPS from John Romero fares better in public reception.
