The city will hold an unveiling ceremony for the statues of Breaking Bad protagonists

Jesse, I need you to cover me in bronze, it’s very important

In what could be the first and only statues dedicated to meth cookers, Albuquerque is getting statues of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Commissioned by show creator Vince Gilligan, sculptor Trevor Grove has been working on these Breaking Bad bronzes since 2019. Gilligan is donating the sculptures to Alberquerque with the backing of Sony Pictures Television.

In a press release, Gilligan lays out why he decided to donate these statues to the city.

Over the course of fifteen years, two TV shows and one movie, Albuquerque has been wonderful to us. I wanted to return the favor and give something back. These larger-than-life bronzes of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman exist thanks to the generosity of Sony Pictures Television and the artistry of sculptor Trevor Grove, and I love them. It makes me happy to picture them gracing The Duke City for decades to come, attracting busloads of tourists.

The statues will be displayed in the Albuquerque Convention Centre after an unveiling ceremony on July 29th. At this ceremony will be a variety of guests. From Gilligan and Better Call Saul co-creator Peter Gould, to the actors of the characters themselves: Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul.

This news comes as the last few episodes of Better Call Saul’s final season have started to air. Starting yesterday, July 18th, Sony Pictures Television will release episodes weekly until August 15th. The show acts as a prequel to Breaking Bad, with Walt and Jesse set to appear in these last few episodes.

I’m not sure, a quick look over the Albuquerque Convention Centre website (http://www.albuquerquecc.com/) doesn’t turn up much at the moment but I’d say there’s the place to keep checking for more info!
