James Cameron might give up the reigns to Avatar after 3

Speaking with Empire, director James Cameron talked about Avatar movies beyond the upcoming Avatar: The Way of Water. This sequel, announced at CinemaCon earlier this year, comes 13 years after the first film. However, we’re already looking beyond the sequel to the films that come after, namely 3, 4 and 5. The third film in the series is set for a 2024 release, having been shot alongside The Way of Water. Cameron’s plan is to shoot 4 and 5 in the same manner. However, he is uncertain whether he’ll be in the directors seat for these movies.
The Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming… I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.
James Cameron, on Avatar films beyond The Way of Water
It’s too early to call it now, since these hypothetical follow-ups aren’t even in production yet. Cameron himself says Avatar 4 onwards isn’t a sure thing and that it “depends on market forces” whether he’ll get the opportunity to make these films. Still, he’s clearly enthusiastic about them, saying “movie four is a corker. It’s a motherfucker. I actually hope I get to make it.”
We’ll have to see how things go after The Way of Water hits cinemas this December 16th. But, there’s every possibility that Cameron will step back from the project at some point.
