Long-awaited sequel to 2012 high fantasy action-RPG Dragon’s Dogma is officially in development

dragon's dogma 2

Capcom released a 10th anniversary video for Dragon’s Dogma yesterday, June 16th. The video went through how the game came to be; director Hideaki Itsuno talked through his inspirations and his desire to make an action RPG game. At the end, Itsuno confirms that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is in development, and a separate tweet states that the team are using Capcom’s RE Engine to make it.

At the moment, that’s all we really have. Itsuno says “everyone in the development team is hard at work creating a game that we hope you will enjoy!” So, it’s likely we won’t see the sequel for a while yet.

Dragon’s Dogma’s Development

Dragon’s Dogma released in 2012 to critical and financial success, getting consistently positive reviews and selling 1.5 million units worldwide. In the 10th anniversary video, Itsuno describes how he wanted to make an action RPG before he worked on Devil May Cry 2. He goes through the early concept of an RPG that emulated the feeling of playing with friends online. Eventually, this would become the pawn system that would find its way to the final release. This system let you create characters that could be sent off into other player’s world to join their party.

After directing Devil May Cry 2, 3, and 4, Itsuno then pitched Dragon’s Dogma as Capcom’s next big release. Despite some initial resistance, Capcom greenlit the game and it went into production. Itsuno, alongside art director Daigo Ikeno and level designer Kinichi Suzuki, talk about their ideas behind the game’s creatures. According to Itsuno, Ikeno was the first to come up with the idea of climbing monsters, a core mechanic of the game considering the scale of them. They also talk through the design of some creatures. For example, the Cyclops in game being based on early real-world myths that fossilised elephant skulls belonged to cyclopses.
