Because I, for one, am sick of hearing about the Skywalkers

In an interview with Total Film, director Taika Waititi talks about his plans for his upcoming Star Wars movie. In the interview, he says “I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand”.
I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millenium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’ That all stands alone, that’s great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.
Taika Waititi
Waititi touches on a pretty sizeable problem with recent Star Wars in that Disney needs to connect it all. We can’t just hear about a story on the other side of the galaxy, it has to loop back to these central characters in some way. As a result, these shows leave vast swathes of the Star Wars universe unexplored. Millenia of stories untold because we need someone Skywalker-adjacent to show up in the finale for a big reveal.
Star Wars’ main cast get around
Most upcoming Star Wars shows are set in the same time period. Obi-Wan Kenobi is currently airing and follows the titular jedi in his years watching over Luke Skywalker. Meanwhile, the Star Wars celebration announced Andor, a prequel to a prequel of the first film that follows the early days of the rebellion. This was alongside The Mandalorian season 3, which started off unrelated and then slowly brought itself into these central characters. Featuring the appearances of people like Boba Fett, Ahsoka Tano, and eventually Luke Skywalker himself.

Not to say this is inherently an awful thing. There are characters that would be interesting to follow and find out more about, and some of these shows could well deliver on that. However, there are so many planets in the Star Wars universe that the shows, movies, and games have left untouched. Isn’t it time we moved on from the same characters and conflicts we started on? Fingers crossed Taika Waititi can tell a new story within this universe and actually expand upon it. Because what I don’t want is another thread that leads back to the core cast of Episodes 1-9.
