The Summer Game Fest showcase had a bunch of games

Yesterday, June 9th, saw the return of Summer Game Fest that’s been running since 2020. Given the void left by a lack of E3 this year, Summer Game Fest 2022 had big shoes to fill.
So, how did they do?
The big reveals
Earlier in the week Geoff Keighley, host of the Fest, said that the event would mostly be focused on announced games and there wouldn’t be a ton of new announcements. However, there were still some interesting reveals. Probably the biggest was The Last of Us Part 1, a ground-up remake of The Last of Us. With fresh graphics, AI, and combat, this remake is set to release on September 2nd on PS5 and PC. Naughty Dog also showed a glimpse of a standalone multiplayer Last of Us game, as well as a fresh look at The Last of Us HBO show.

Also revealed, or rather re-revealed was Routine, a sci-fi indie horror game that was announced 10 years ago. Due to financial difficulty and development issues, the project essentially had to be restarted. However, this time developers Lunar Software are teaming up with Raw Fury to get the game to release.
There was also the reveal of Marvel’s Midnight Suns, a Marvel themed XCOM-like game; Stormgate, an RTS from ex-Blizzard devs; and Aliens: Dark Descent, a squad-based top-down shooter.

Gameplay showcases
Alongside fresh reveals, we also got some world premiere gameplay showcases too. PlayStation‘s State of Play showed off The Callisto Protocol earlier in the week, however the Summer Game Fest gave us a first look at unedited gameplay. The game looked like a Dead Space successor from the cinematic trailer, and this gameplay trailer very much reinforces that idea.
There was also new gameplay for Street Fighter 6 showing off returning fighter Guile and his stage that looks to be on an aircraft carrier with a jet in the background, reminiscent of the fighter’s previous stages. We also got a look at Witchfire, a Viking-themed FPS from the devs of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

Day of the Devs
Following the Summer Game Fest was ‘Day of the Devs’, an indie showcase organised by Double Fine and iam8bit. The showcase included games like Choo-Choo Charles, a survival horror game about defending against a demonic spider train; or SCHiM, a game that has you hopping between shadows on the ground.
