Sony showed off new footage for the Resident Evil 4 remake and The Callisto Protocol at PlayStation’s State of Play

Horror fans will be eating well at the turn of the new year with two hotly anticipated horror games releasing within months of each other, The Callisto Protocol and the Resident Evil 4 remake. The Callisto Protocol, a sci-fi horror directed by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield, releases on December 2nd this year. Meanwhile, Capcom‘s remake of the legendary Resident Evil 4 has a release date for March 24th, 2023.
Resident Evil 4 Remake

The Resident Evil 4 remake has been swirling around the rumour mill for a while now. Following the success of the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes, the same treatment was inevitable for 4. Judging by the trailer and how the other remakes turned out, we’ll likely be seeing a reimagining of 4’s story. By the looks of things, we might be seeing how Leon Kennedy goes from a rookie cop in Resi 2 to an international secret agent in Resi 4. There also seems to be more, or at least, a different section with Ashley, the president’s daughter.

The Callisto Protocol

On the other hand, The Callisto Protocol was announced back in December of 2020 with a cinematic trailer. Billed as a story-driven survival horror game, the trailers have shown off robots, freakishly distorted creatures, and plenty of gore. The game takes place on Callisto, one of Jupiter’s moons, in 2320. You play as Jacob Lee, an inmate of Black Iron Prison which is located on the moon. Lo and behold, inmates start turning into creatures and you must then fight through the chaos to survive. Between the sci-fi setting, third person shooter gameplay, and the health indicator on the back of the character’s neck, The Callisto Protocol is really shaping up to be a spiritual successor to Dead Space.

Dead Space Remake

Speaking of Dead Space, there’s also the Dead Space Remake set to release January 27th, 2023. Unlike the Resident Evil remakes, Dead Space promises to retain the original’s story and structure, instead focusing on recreating the game’s assets. With updated models and environments as well as seamless transitions between levels, developer Motive Studios is really looking to take advantage of modern tech to enhance the legendary horror title.
