John Woo Is Back! Will Direct Remake of The Killer!

Yesterday, NBCUniversal announced that “celebrated action auteur John Woo returns to reimagine and direct his own classic, The Killer.” The movie has been set for a 2023 release, but no specific date has been announced.

John Woo is a legendary director whose movies inspired dozens of classic movies and videogames. For movies, these include Equilibrium and The Matrix. For videogames, Max Payne, Rise of the Triad, and Devil May Cry. If you find yourself firing two pistols as you cartwheel in the air in slow motion, you know who to thank.

From Desperado to Devil Hunter

Suffice it to say, John Woo movies are the originators of dual-wielding acrobatics and stylish movie action! Even so, The Killer was not only filled to the brim with gun fights, but also had a surprisingly emotional story that most action movies at the time lacked.

The movie centres around Ah Jong, a hitman who accidentally blinds a nightclub singer during an assassination gone wrong. Stricken with guilt, Ah Jong undertakes a dangerous job to kill a high ranking Triad boss to pay for medical treatment in the name of love.

In the midst of it all, unlikely bonds are forged and friendships are destroyed in the crime-ridden urban jungle of Hong Kong. Moreover, the movie’s dialogue, music and camera composition feel raw and deliberate throughout the whole runtime. It is a certified classic that I highly recommend you watch.

Unfortunately, John Woo’s recent movies have not seen the same level of success nor quality as his previous work. His 2017 release of Manhunt, had mediocre reviews citing a convoluted story despite impressive action sequences.

That said, perhaps Woo may find better luck reconnecting with his own original story with full creative control. Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing a new modern take on this adrenaline fuelled Hong Kong classic!
