Hot Wheels is seemingly leading the way with a new live-action movie in the works. According to Deadline, the long-awaited Hot Wheels adaptation has returned to the cards, with J.J. Abrams’s production company Bad Robot producing a live-action movie based on the world-famous toys.
The film has been described as a “high-throttle actioner” that will demonstrate some of the world’s most stylish cars and trucks. One thing to remember is that this isn’t the first time Hot Wheels has revved up a live-action movie. Back in 2016, Fast & Furious director Justin Lin was attached to the Hot Wheels movie, which even at that point had been in and out of development for over a decade.

A series of Hot Wheels movies have been produced and cancelled for a very, very long time. The film was originally set up to be directed by McG for Columbia back in 2003 before moving over to Warner Bros a few years later. By 2013, Simon Crane had been appointed to direct the property by Legendary after a quick oil change in 2011. Since then, little has been heard about the project.
Peter Dodd, Mattel Films Vice President of Production, said that Hot Wheels were more than just cars when he was growing up. “Today, we at Warner Bros. are thrilled to bring that imagination to the big screen with Robbie Brenner and the creative team at Mattel along with the ingenious minds of J.J. Abrams, Hannah Minghella, and the team at Bad Robot.”

In addition, it’s important to note that the “movie based on a toy” genre has become more viable and crowded since 2016, especially since the success of The Lego Movie. After nearly a decade of development, a movie based on Monopoly starring Kevin Hart is still coming, along with films based on Slinky, Rubik’s Cube, and even Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.
Also in development is an upcoming Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, and Ryan Gosling, being produced by Mattel Films in partnership with Warner Bros.
