Ubisoft could be acquired by another company, here’s why

Reports and accounts point to Ubisoft being the next big game acquisition

A Bloomberg report states that game company Ubisoft could be sold on. The report suggests private equity firms have shown interest in the publisher, however no talks have started yet.

This joins deals like Sony acquiring Bungie and Take-Two buying Zynga in large-scale video game company acquisitions. The biggest of these so far being Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, announced earlier this year.

This could lead to a mass consolidation of the gaming industry into a few big companies, much like the film industry. Ubisoft, while not quite as big a company as Activision Blizzard, is still quite big. It would make a significant addition to any company that buys it.

A rough few years

A Kotaku article cites “flagging stock price” and “ongoing production struggles” as reasons for the potential sale. This is according to “current and former Ubisoft employees”.

Ubisoft has many projects in the works yet to have a concrete release date. Ubisoft announced projects like Skull & Bones and Beyond Good and Evil 2 years ago but have had next to no updates on any of them. On the other hand, games like the Prince of Persia remake and The Settlers have seen delays in recent years.

The last we heard of Skull & Bones was back in 2020

This is not to mention the allegations of sexual harrassment and assault that have plagued the company for years. First brought to the public eye in 2020, the situation hasn’t improved much according to A Better Ubisoft, a group seeking to improve working conditions in the company.

Between all this and Ubisoft’s recent universally disliked dabbling with NFTs, it’s no wonder that stock prices have been slumping recently. However, their stock prices have risen since Bloomberg released their report.

With these recent troubles, perhaps a larger company acquiring them could help organise Ubisoft. On the other hand, it could have very little effect on the publisher. Only time will tell if anyone will buy Ubisoft, and how drastically it will affect the company.

Do you think Ubisoft will be bought out? Who will be the one to acquire the company? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or hop over to the All Maverick Discord to chat with us about all things gaming!
