Sony Wants Bungie Employees To Stay; Plans To Pay USD$1.2 Billion As Incentive!

Earlier this week, Sony had announced that they had bought Bungie, much to the surprise of the gaming community and industry. The timing was impeccable, since Microsoft themselves bought gaming giant Activision Blizzard King only two weeks earlier.

Disclaimer: Unlikely that this actually happened, amusing as it may be

These deals were kept very closely guarded. Media coverage about these buyouts prior to the announcements were non-existent; not even rumours were reported. Therefore, it’s safe to say that the employees of ABK and Bungie were shocked about the change in upper management.

To alleviate any concerns with the transition, Sony addressed in its recent Q3’21 earnings report that they will be spending 1/3 of the USD$3.6 billion offer on implementing a long term retention plan, awarding deferred payments to employees who continue to work at Bungie after the acquisition.

One could argue that this is an attempt to buy the trust of the employees, but I believe it goes somewhat deeper. By having a solidified plan that can be publicly scrutinised, Sony is demonstrating that they are committed to the job security of Bungie employees and have the financial means to support them.

As Destiny 2 is performing extremely well on multiple platforms and the studio is in the midst of working on a new title, Sony would definitely appreciate if business continued as per usual.

In a way, this is the equivalent of bringing flowers to your partner’s parents to show that you’re serious. Only that, the lilies and roses are Benjamin Franklins and Abraham Lincolns.

Are you happy for the Bungie employees? Was this a good move? Or is this some part of nefarious corporate plot? Go wild with your thoughts in the comment box!
