With the Royal Rumble now been and gone, I thought it was crucial to complete our All Maverick coverage by going back and looking at my predictions to see if I managed to call any returns. (You can read my predictions here if you haven’t already done so).
Men’s Royal Rumble
I’ll follow my original structure and first, talk about the men’s royal rumble! My original realistic pick to win the whole Royal Rumble was AJ Styles. Sadly, as soon as I saw that he was first out I knew his chances of doing just that were slim to say the very least. This gave me no surprise when AJ was eventually eliminated without him even being a part of the final four competitors.

Of all my fantasy picks, the only one to actually show up was none other than Shane McMahon! Someone who I have previously mentioned my own bias of. It’s always a delight to see Shane O’Mac on my TV screen! Watching Shane be a part of the final four was a very nice surprise and I even recall it came down to Brock Lesnar and Shane as the final two in the ring. Sadly, I knew Shane wouldn’t be beating Brock but it’s still nice to see him nonetheless and I’m hoping he will be a part of Wrestlemania in some shape or form!

Women’s Royal Rumble
Out of my three ‘realistic’ picks for the Women’s Royal Rumble, only one actually showed up which was Charlotte Flair, and to be honest; I’m glad that she didn’t win the Rumble. Nobody needs two titles and especially not Charlotte!

As much controversy as the return of Ronda Rousey has caused, I do have to say that I did call it! I called Ronda as a ‘fantasy’ pick and was truly amazed to witness Ronda’s entrance and then her going on to actually win the Royal Rumble! Now, I am happy to see her back and all but I do have to address that Ronda Rousey did not need to win the Royal Rumble. She is a star in her own right and didn’t need this win to validate her spot in a Wrestlemania match; I would rather this win had gone to someone like Liv Morgan instead. I will admit though, I am fairly excited to see heel Ronda! Here’s to hoping something good comes from this.

Summary
That happens to be it! I can safely say that I did call the winner of the Women’s Royal Rumble and also, one of the shock entrants to the Men’s too! For a Pay Per View that’s based around unpredictability, that’s not too bad of a claim to make!
I do have to say that if you compare this year’s PPV to others that have come before it, yes it is very lacklustre and the fact that the likes of Cesaro or Finn Balor didn’t even see any action is quite saddening. As fun as it is to see people like Ronda, Shane, Bad Bunny and Johnny Knoxville; they didn’t need to be a part of this match as they are stars in their own right and can easily find other ways to get into Wrestlemania. Overall, this year’s Royal Rumble was okay! Not great, nor good but also not terrible or bad.
