Yes you read that right. Popular anime series My Hero Academia, also known as Boku No Hero Academia, is getting a Free to Play Multiplayer 24 man Battle Royale Brawler for PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC. Unfortunately, PS5 and Xbox Series X releases have not been announced.
My Hero Academia (MHA) is an anime set in a world where the majority of the world’s population has superpowers known as “quirks”. You follow Izuku Midoriya who begins as a “quirkless” child as he studies at a prestigious highschool for training superheroes, fighting off various super villains and discovering what it truly means to be a hero.
The game seemingly has very little if any focus on narrative so I would recommend watching the anime or reading the manga (comic) if you are interested in the story.
Several members of the main cast can be seen in the trailer such as Bakugo, Todoroki, Uraraka and Tsuyu, so it is safe to assume that the roster will have all members of Class 1-A. Unexpectedly, several other side characters including the teachers and villains can also be seen as playable characters. The game appears to have an impressive spread of characters from the show, which fans like myself will appreciate.
The game will feature a mixture of third person shooter and fighter combat with a decent portion of the roster having ranged attacks as well as melee options. Heroes will also have abilities for defence and mobility such as the creation of barriers or flight!

Matches will be in a format of 8 teams of 3 members, battling it out to be the last team standing. Players will need to scavenge the map for items and cards to either improve equipped quirks or access entirely new quirks. As seen in the gameplay footage, the map will also slowly reduce its playable area, forcing players to encounter each other and engage in combat.
There has been no confirmation of a release date, however on the official site there appears to be a link to sign up for the Closed Beta Test starting on February 2 for players in Japan. It remains to be seen if the game is cross platform and how monetisation will be implemented.
It’s an interesting direction for the Battle Royale genre and also a new direction for the MHA games which previously were traditional fighting games or brawlers. Movement seems to be tight and performance in the trailer shows no signs of optimisation issues however that may change in the Closed Beta Test.
