Hot off the heels of Matrix: Resurrection, Keanu Reeves is once again donning the mantle of the eponymous Jonathan Wick for the latest entry into the franchise. IGN released an exclusive teaser which confirms the movie will premiere on March 24th, 2023.
Yeah, I’m thinking I’m back!– Keanu Reeves as John Wick, John Wick 2014
The teaser does not contain any scenes from the movie itself, but I believe it contains subtle clues about what will be taking place in the next movie.
Firstly, the teaser takes place in the operations room of the High Table, where administrative work such as placing bounties on targets and the blacklisting of certain members takes place.
This suggests that the focus of the movie will be on the High Table organisation, perhaps as the main antagonistic faction and that we may get more insight as to who are the individuals that lead the global criminal organisation.
Operators redirecting calls from various individuals affiliated with crime and assassins.
Second, the teaser at some point pans over to a large chalkboard proudly proclaiming the release date.
Upon closer inspection, the board is actually a bounty board listing all high value targets, since John Wick’s name is on the list and various categories can be seen such as “bounty” and “status”. Could the names on the list be the assassins who will aid John in this movie?
As a sidenote, an operator is seen moving the name “Anderson. T.” which could be a reference to the Matrix protagonist, Thomas Anderson. Though, it is most likely a subtle nod to the movie’s connection via Keanu Reeves rather than any possibility of a crossover.
Finally, the video ends with the words “be seeing you”, with cherry blossoms floating down the screen. It seems earlier rumours that the next movie will be centered around Japan have seen some validation, as the native flowers have heavy cultural connection to the country.
With the appearance of ninja-assassins under Zero and the reveal of the Round Table’s origins as the Arabic Hashashin, it has been established that historic assassin orders have persisted to the present in the movie’s setting.
Seeing that John Wick is up against the entirety of the Round Table, he may need to enlist the aid of another prominent assassin order of equal power. If the Hashashin controls the west, then he requires the aid from those who control the east; the Shinobi.
Of course this is all speculation, but with the precedent for globe trotting, name-dropping and head-popping the franchise is known for, I don’t see a reason why the above details will not happen. The John Wick movies are more about form over function; who cares if it doesn’t make sense, it’s all about the rule of cool!
If you have not watched the previous John Wick movies, I highly recommend you do as they are true callbacks to the classic action movies of the 80s and 90s blended with the modern sensibilities of subtlety and suspense.
Are you excited about the movie? What did you thinking about the teaser? Are you a fan of John Wick and if not, have I inspired you to give the series a try? Go wild with your thoughts in the comment box and have a lovely holiday season!
