Almost as if to immediately punish fans after giving them the long-awaited Gen 4 remakes, Nintendo has supposedly done the unthinkable…allowed Ed Sheeran near the Pokemon franchise.
Today the chart-dominating and to some, ear-grating musician Ed Sheeran has teased an upcoming collaboration with both The Pokémon Company and Niantic. As teased by an image shared on his social media, the singer-songwriter has seemingly set his sights on the monumentally massive mobile game Pokémon Go.
Simply saying “coming soon” with a #PokemonGOxEdSheeran hashtag, the post gives us little to go on; except of course for the existential threat that now pervades every fracture of our now tortured existence.
With no details to explain what this collaboration could possibly be, we’re left in the most harrowing of circumstances where we can do nothing but fear the worst until we’re finally put out of our misery. Of course, one benefit to note is that when that moment does come, it’ll just be a mercy.

We’re sure that fans of both Sheeran and Pokémon must be excited nonetheless. We’re also sure that those people (if they exist) are not the people we would wish to spend time with during our finite time before the grave.
Either way, there is certainly both anticipation and dread for more details to be inevitably released. The official Pokémon UK Twitter account has retweeted Sheeran’s Tease with the glancing eyes emoji; almost as if to taunt us with the fact that a large number of official bodies did indeed consent to the horrifying reality of whatever end product this escapade will produce.
Or maybe it’ll be fine, I don’t know?
Although I jest (somewhat), it is nevertheless a very odd team-up to see manifest. Will Ed Sheeran be allowing Niantic to play his songs through the game? Will he just be appearing as himself in an upcoming advertisement? Is he going to be revealed to be Ditto’s true form? Has Sheeran secretly been a Pokemon this entire time, using grass whistle and leech seed to drain all our energy whilst his career flourishes? That would explain a lot actually. After all, given that he is in the music industry, where backstabbing is just a form of hello, it would make sense if he were a Grass Type.
If anything further is revealed, I may be able to bring myself to cover it, but I can’t promise that my eyes and ears will survive the journey.
What do you think of this bizarre collaboration? Do you think Ed will actually appear in the game? Let us know in the comments!
