To be perfectly honest, we’re still reeling from the casting announcement for the upcoming Super Mario Movie. In our previous blog about it, we said the casting was absolutely bananas. Well, it seems that Illumination heard this and thought “challenge accepted”, for now, we may have an endless surplus of bananas incoming.
That’s right, rumours are now circulating that a Donkey Kong Spin-Off to the Mario Movie could very well be in production. Yep, a whole movie about Donkey Kong voiced by Seth Rogan…Just banana slama me into the ground right now why don’t you?
We’ve barely had time to recover from the bizarre casting of Chris Pratt as Mario and Jack Black as Bowser, and already Nintendo seems set on making sequels and spin-offs to a film that hasn’t even had its first teaser yet! It’s bad enough that we have to anticipate Mario talking non-stop with the voice of a Lego construction worker, but now we also can expect double the amount of chatter time from a beardy-voiced Ape. But if he’s going to talk a lot, we can at least hope that Donkey Kong will indeed say Trans Rights.

This speculation comes from a report from Giant Freakin Robot, which if true, will lead to more than just barrels being chucked at my screen. The pop culture site reports that Rogan has signed up for a solo DK movie that will come out after the initial Mario movie. If this is true, then the absolute earliest we could expect this film would be 2023.
This begs the question as to whether Nintendo and Illumination are indeed setting the groundwork for a Nintendo Shared Cinematic Universe. Today, Donkey Kong Country and Luigi’s Mansion films, tomorrow, Xenoblade Chronicles The Movie, and an Ice Climbers Netflix series?

If this film does happen, we can certainly expect to see more of Fred Armisen as well, who is voicing Cranky Kong in the upcoming Mario flick. One dreads to think about who else they could cast as the Kong family. Aziz Ansari as Diddy Kong? Scarlet Johansson as Dixie Kong? Chunky Kong played by…*shudder*…James Cordon?….you know what I’m sorry I even brought it up.
This isn’t even the first time there’s been talk of more Donkey Kong animated content, with other rumours circulating about a Donkey Kong animation being in development.
To be fair, both the Mario movie and this potential sequel could very well be enjoyable in their own rights, but right now, purely based on these casting choices, I’m nothing short of being bam-banana-boozled…
