While we’re still waiting on finer details about the new Expansion Pack coming to Nintendo Switch Online (notably the price), we do now have some clarification about the N64 titles that will be offered via the service.
Previously it appeared that the PAL versions of the N64 games would only run at 50hz just like how they did when they were originally released for the N64 in the 90’s. However, the official Nintendo of Europe Twitter account has confirmed that these games will also be available to play in the 60Hz English language version as well.
They also added that select games will also have the option to play the original European PAL version with language options!
This is great news in that it gives all players the freedom to play N64 games however they like, in whatever quality and language they choose. The games being offered via this service will also contain online multiplayer capability; it took over 20 years later but we’ll finally be able to play Mario Kart 64 with friends overseas.
Nintendo Switch Online’s expansion pack will release later this month in October 2021. Switch Online users will have the option to maintain their current membership or pay to upgrade in order to obtain the N64 and MegaDrive titles. Nintendo will also be selling wireless N64 and Sega MegaDrive controllers to make the retro experience as authentic as possible.

We’re just thankful that PAL games will not be restricted in terms of performance!
Are you excited about getting to play all your favourite N64 games in glorious 60hz? Will you be upgrading to the new Switch Online membership? Let us know in the comments!
