Over the years, we’ve had many interesting interpretations of golf in video games. From super-powered Mario Golf, to the bizarre amphibious Ribbit King, to the chaotic and silly What the Golf. But now with Cursed to Golf, we have the latest contender in a long line of club-swinging series; a 2D side-scroller about escaping golf purgatory. Experiencing existential dread whilst playing golf may indeed be the closest emulation to the real sport so far!
Chuhai Labs and Thunderful Publishing (of Say No More fame) present what they call a “roguelike golf adventure”, where the player is tasked with taking on 18 dungeon-like holes, armed only with 3 clubs, a golf ball, and ‘Ace Card’ power-ups to help your way to ascension.
Cursed to Golf will release next year for both PC and Switch, and promises the combine “the fun of golf” with “the depth of a roguelike”. We already can’t wait for the inevitable sequel game about escaping Croquet limbo.
Check out the blurb from their press release:
Cursed to Golf offers a fresh take on the golfing and roguelike subgenres. Played like a golfinated turn-based 2D side scrolling puzzle platformer, attempt to survive each hole by reaching the flag within the PAR Count; a designated amount of swings you have to reach the end. If the PAR Count reaches zero you’ll get sucked through a purgatorial vortex back to the beginning of the course. While classic golf obstacles like the water hazards and bunkers will make an appearance, you’ll also come across high powered fans, spikes, vines, TNT boxes, teleporters and a whole load more variables that can be a help or a hindrance on your way to the hole. It’s all par for the course in this twisted take on the classic game!

From the looks of it, we already love the pixel art style, the character designs, and the interesting puzzle elements at play with aiming your shots and using the correct powerups to your advantage! With a potentially uplifting or upsetting storyline dealing with golf purgatory, this may also end up being a cutesy lil’ puzzler that’s worth it for the story alone!
Do you reckon this game looks on PAR, or will it just be a bogey? Let us know in the comments below!
