It’s official, current Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker and current Showrunner Chris Chibnall are set to leave Doctor Who in a trio of Specials, culminating in an epic blockbuster Special in autumn 2022 as part of the BBC’s Centenary celebrations.

Jodie Whittaker was cast by Chris Chibnall as the first female Doctor in 2017, so far starring in 2 full series & 2 holiday specials. Now, 9 more episodes remain left to conclude her time at the helm of the Tardis. Whittaker was groundbreaking as the first female Doctor, bringing to the role warmth, charm, endearment, and humour in a totally unique way.
Her era of the now 58-year-old Sci-Fi show has brought us companions Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Graham (Bradley Walsh), with acclaimed Sacha Dhawan as the latest incarnation of the Master plus Jo Martin as the mysterious Fugitive Doctor.

Her era has also brought the show great critical acclaim with episodes such as Demons of the Punjab, Spyfall and Rosa garnering awards and recognition from BAFTA, TV Choice, Screen Nation, Hugo, Saturn and Critics Choice nominations. Jodie was even voted 2nd Most Popular Doctor of all time, coming very closely after 10th Doctor David Tennant, in a poll of more than 50,000 fans for Radio Times.
Alas, all good things must come to an end, as Jodie and Chris will produce a 6-part series later this year, followed by 3 specials airing across both 2021 and 2022 before the Doctor regenerates once again.
On the official Doctor Who Website, Chris Chibnall said:
“Jodie and I made a “three series and out” pact with each other at the start of this once-in-a-lifetime blast. So now our shift is done, and we’re handing back the TARDIS keys.
“Jodie’s magnificent, iconic Doctor has exceeded all our high expectations. She’s been the gold standard leading actor, shouldering the responsibility of being the first female Doctor with style, strength, warmth, generosity and humour. She captured the public imagination and continues to inspire adoration around the world, as well as from everyone on the production. I can’t imagine working with a more inspiring Doctor – so I’m not going to!
While we are sad to see them go, we are at least excited to watch how Jodie’s Doctor’s final set of episodes will conclude her story in the upcoming 13th series starting later this year!
