Update (13/9/20)
After a couple of months wait, Jaws of the Lion has just arrived!
First thoughts
- The box is deep but way smaller than Gloomhaven, probably about 35% of its overall size.
- The components are actually organised…though I don’t know how they expect you to fit everything in those little baggies! I’ve resorted to ram it in and hope, and approach I take with many things in life đ
- I’m excited to see how the scenario books work instead of the tiles.
- The first 5 scenarios acting as a small introduction of mechanics look great.
- I can’t wait to play it!

Less than two months after the Kickstarter juggernaut that was Frosthaven concluded itâs run as the number one funded board game of all time, Issac Childres dives back into his fantastical world, with âGloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion.
Gloomhaven is a game that has clearly earned its place at the top of the mountain that is BoardGameGeekâs popularity list, however for even the most well tested of board game enthusiasts Gloomhaven has always been a game of intimidating girth…in box terms.
Thatâs right, getting this behemoth to the table without scaring the shit out of less seasoned gamers is going to be up there with convincing Donald Trump that he isnât the greatest mind of our time on the âstuff that isnât going to happen scaleâ
That my friends is where Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion has your back. This is âGloomhaven for beginnersâ a smaller sneakier way to get those dear to you hooker into the Gloomhaven universe before they realise what youâve done, itâs very much the Trojan Horse of gaming…which I guess makes your friends the gullible denizens of a city far too willing to take in a mysterious gift which will undoubtedly lead to their demise, maybe this analogy has overstayed its welcome.
Jaws of the Lion is Gloomhaven in all but ridiculous scale. Whereas Gloomhaven includes roughly 100 scenarios, dozens of monsters, and a hefty selection of heroes; Jaws of the Lion is made up of 25 scenarios, 15 monsters and 4 heroes. Donât be fooled that is still A LOT of content to battle your way through.
So whatâs the game like I hear you cry, well I canât tell you, not first hand anyway. Sadly I imagine itâs going to be a couple of months before I manage to get my hands on a copy, however, if those other, far more well-established channels are to be believed itâs another romping success.
